SIGNAL TAPES

Signal Tapes series is based on the artist`s interest of the self-developed painting or ‘ready made’ painting. Signal tape which is used in construction and landscaping works on urban space recreated on canvas as a continuous structure using acrylic and stencil. Such an approach is devoid of any social or political connotations. It is nor a warning, neither an attempt to free the consciousness of any visual clichés or accusation of modern-day urbanism. Artist’s attention is moving not from the painting towards the reality, but rather vice versa — from the three- dimensional space of everyday life towards the painting.

SCANS / 2008-2014

The work is based on a simple formal idea: introducing a sudden distortion into the process of scanning a picture. When making her modernist gesture, the artist is not in full control of the process and cannot predict the exact result, like Pollock with his dripping technique. Painting and architecture transform themselves obediently and acquire new shapes and meanings, following the gestures of the artist who assumes the role of an orchestra conductor.

DAISIES / 2013-2014

The Daisies project is a metaphor for the unexpected danger coming from the supposed harmless source. It refers to the famous movie of the Czechoslovak New Wave — Daisies (1966) by Vera Chytilová, which played up the image of lovely, cute and seemingly harmless girls, which lies latent destructive force, rage and aggression. The basis of Sveta Shuvaeva’s project is the study of the daily street culture language; hostile words and curses addressed to eternity obscene statements that spontaneously appear on the surface of the city. The artist is repelled from the actual street inscriptions found on fences, walls and stalls. Fragments of daily life collected by the artist into collection, appropriated by artistically transformed and lived through during playback, have formed the basis for the work, while defining the features of shape and color, dictated by reality itself. The suits follow constructivist tradition of garments and fabrics, developed in the 1920’s by female artists Popova and Stepanova.

CROWD CHARACTER / 2015

The world culture has numerous images of mass actions with participants united by common real or social space, social class. In Shuvaeva’s drawings one can see people gathered in some specific locations. It is hard to imagine what draws them together. Sociologically speaking, they belong to di erent social zones, di erent self-other systems. Their aims and motivations are not the same.

These Crowd Characters are drawn in a way as if a metaphorical space of possible interactions is growing around them. With few exceptions, the borders of this space are rather elusive. On the one hand, it seems that these people are united by some inner logics. On the other side, the vectors they produce (in one case symbolized by the flags overhead) are being dispersed in different directions.
